New 'Brand' Unveiled
Reporter: Chris Brennaman
The logo unveiled Tuesday by the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, along with the slogan, "A better longitude on life" will be used to help market the city of Meridian and Lauderdale County, as well as a number of other agencies.
Officials say they hope that having one logo used by each group will provide a unified front for marketing the area.
"When you think about location and your city, one of the main things that you want is something that's recognizable," said Laura Davis, chairman of the EMBDC Image Committee. "When people think about Meridian, they want a common theme, a common goal, of who we are. With this new campaign we hope to accomplish that."
While the brand has universal elements, such as the name Meridian and the 'X-logo', as it is called, variations can be made to fit an individual agency or company.
The brand was developed by Northstar, a marketing company from Tennessee, which began its research of the area at the grand opening of the MSU-Riley Center.
"A lot of research was put into this project, a lot of surveys and profiles, and all of the comments were basically positive about Meridian being a great place to live and work. We have so many things to offer in those areas," Davis said.
Both the logo, which features crossing latitude and longitude lines, and the slogan are a play on the global location of Meridian.
"Eighty-eight degrees longitude. That's our location. It ties in to the better longitude on life for Meridian-Lauderdale County," said Davis. "You'll see these pins and the 88 degrees and that's what tells us where we are."
The logo is already being used on posters by the Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau and will soon grace billboards and magazine advertisements for the area.
